Quarter shares
A quarter cow, and where most people start.
A quarter is the same idea as a half at half the size. Around a hundred pounds of beef from one animal, cut the way you asked for it, in a freezer you probably already own.
What you get
| Packaged weight | Around 100 pounds, quoted per animal before you commit |
|---|---|
| Freezer space | About 3 cubic feet |
| Cut sheet | Yours to fill out, same as a half |
| Best for | Two to four people, or a first share |
The honest trade
A quarter costs a little more per pound than a half. The processing, the packaging and the handling are the same work spread over less beef, so the per pound number goes up. What you get in exchange is a smaller check and a freezer that closes.
Ready for more?
Households that cook beef most nights usually move up to a half beef after their first year.
Questions we get
How much meat is in a quarter beef?
Usually around 100 pounds packaged, though it depends on the animal. We quote the take home weight for your specific animal first.
How much freezer space does a quarter cow need?
About 3 cubic feet, which most standalone freezers handle easily.
Is a quarter cheaper per pound than a half?
No. Smaller shares cost slightly more per pound because the processing and handling are the same work on a smaller amount of beef. The trade is a smaller check and less freezer.
Do I still get to choose the cuts?
Yes. A quarter buyer fills out a cut sheet the same as a half buyer.
